Marianela Núñez in Giselle
every december, waxwings descend on great britain from their naive scandanavian breading grounds. birdwatchers across the uk travel hundreds of miles to catch a glimpse of the rare birds, who turn up in significant numbers every few years. photos by dan kitwood, who captures the waxwings eating berries from a rowan tree in london.
To all the ignorant people who think Mariska’s No More campaign/Joyful Heart Foundation only helps female survivors, think again.
The amount of times i’ve heard that JHF is just for females, even rant videos on youtube about it. Here’s your proof, JHF is for all victims of sexual assault, rape, sexual abuse, domestic violence and child abuse.
What pisses me off the most about people who assume the JHF is just for female victims/survivors is the wasted energy.
If they used all that hot air to lending a hand - a real voice, to male victims and helped to facilitate a dialogue about sexual assault/domestic violence in the male community, the stigma and the taboo would rapidly dissipate. Attack the problem, not the solution.
The fact of the matter is that the statistics on male rape and domestic violence are projected at best, but in truth unknown. Sexual assault has been socialized into a “woman’s issue”, when in fact it is a human issue, an issue of power politics. Men do not come forward nearly as much as women because it calls into question their masculinity, and essentially feminizes men who come forth. And woah woah woah, a man who shows even a hint of femininity? He’s not a true man! This is such a horrid notion and literally handicaps both men and women. It’s one of the main causes for sexual assault against women and domestic violence against women.
We have to break these gendered chains; we must have these painful conversations about power structures and patriarchy.
No more silence if we ever expect to put an end to these issues.
